Simon Greenleaf letter to E.J. Coale

Greenleaf writes to E.J. Coale, a Baltimore bookseller, saying he is sending 30 copies of a "Brief inquiry into the origin & principles of Free-Masonry" for sale at $1.25 each. He indicates that a Mr. William Moody, an instructor in Baltimore that he knows, will assist in making this work known "to the fraternity" if desired. The letter is written on an integral envelope.

Simon Greenleaf was born on December 5, 1783 in Newburyport, Massachusetts, where he attended the Latin School from 1790-1799. In 1801, he entered apprenticeship in Ezekiel Whitman's Gloucester, Maine law office. In June 1806, Cumberland County, Maine admitted Greenleaf to the Bar. On September 18, 1806, Greenleaf married Hannah Kingman, daughter to Capt. Ezra Kingman of East Bridgewater, Massachusetts.
